Jeffrey Tobin, CNN's chief legal analyst and acclaimed reporter for The New Yorker, was sidelined in a pivotal moment in the run-up to the presidential election.
Reason: He revealed himself during a Zoom call with colleagues in what he says was an accident
The New Yorker said it had arrested Tobin after the accident and said it was investigating the matter. The comment was first reported by Vice on Monday.
Toobin is usually busy covering a controversial confirmation from the Supreme Court and an election that could end up being challenged on legal grounds.
Tobin said, "I made an embarrassingly stupid mistake thinking I was off camera." "I apologize to my wife, family, friends and co-workers."
"I thought I wasn't visible on Zoom," he added. "I thought no one on the Zoom call could see me. I thought I muted the Zoom video."
The deputy report, citing two unidentified people who were on the video call, said that New Yorker employees were discussing election night coverage. As the group got into smaller sub-discussions, Toobin switched to a second call, which was apparently of a sexual nature. When the participants returned from the side sessions, the sources said, they saw Tobin masturbating.
Mr. Tobin is also a Senior Legal Analyst at CNN. The network said in a statement that Mr. Tobin, who has worked for CNN since 2002, "asked for some time while dealing with a personal case, which we gave us."
Mr. Tobin is the author of nine books, including The Section: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court, Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court, and Very Close Contact. His book "The Run of His Life" has been adapted for television as the FX series "American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson."
