Marital counseling has played a huge part in the success of Red Hastings, Netflix co-founder and co-CEO Poppy Harlow said Thursday.
In a Thursday interview with CNN's Bobby Harlow, Hastings said a marriage counselor who went to him with his 29-year-old wife helped him realize he was a "systematic liar." He would say things like, "Family is the most important" - not because he meant it but because he was "traditional to say it."
Hastings reveals this lesson in his new book, No Rules, No Rules - released this week.
The CEO said that although he was dropping these values, he would stay at work at night if the employee had a problem. He ended up ignoring his family. But that eventually changed.
"In my marriage, I became more honest and forthright, and it helped us a lot," Hastings said of his relationship with his wife.
Hastings said Netflix's vice president recently told him he was "unsympathetic" and that he was "not encouraging criticism." Even with his success, he said, getting negative reactions can still be painful, but it helps him explore the changes that need to be made rather than "fighting them" - which he admits is his natural inclination.
Unlike Facebook (FB), Twitter (TWTR), and other tech giants - Hastings doesn't believe a large portion of Netflix's employees will permanently work at home.
He said, "Not for every day." "It's about getting together and forming those relationships with other humans."
The CEO of Netflix (NFLX) added that building international relations is especially important for the streaming service.
When it comes to shifting and adapting production due to the coronavirus, Hastings said Netflix is capable of producing in Canada, Europe and Asia - where the coronavirus is spreading less widely than it is in the United States.
Netflix added 16 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2020, as people started staying home and watching live broadcasts on the streaming service. The platform added 10 million subscribers in the second quarter (thanks, Tiger King!) And now has more than 183 million subscribers globally.
Netflix's stock is up about 55% over the past year.
