Many community activists and neighborhood organizers expressed their anger at what the video showed. More than 100 people gathered at the scene after the shooting, and many chanted "No justice, no peace."
The shooting took place on the north side near West 62nd Street and Michigan Street. Investigators say they found a pistol near the suspect.
Tuna Reid, 37, who said she is Shawn Reid's aunt, Indianapolis star, told the family that they had not received any information about what had happened.
"Maybe if they weren't here, we could get more information," she said through tears on Wednesday, referring to a large crowd of more than 100 people on Michigan's road south of the shooting.
Chris Bailey, the assistant chief of Indianapolis police, said the police chase started when officers noticed a vehicle recklessly driving on Interstate 65.
Driving the unmarked police car, Deputy Police Chief Kendall Adams saw a Toyota Corolla recklessly drive and hit almost another car, according to a police press release. Adams began to follow, and asked for support. Randall Taylor, in another car behind Adams, joined the stalking, the press release said.
Bailey said the suspect was driving at a speed of approximately 90 miles per hour.
And police said that when distinguished police cars arrived, Adams and Taylor left, a standard procedure for unmarked vehicles. It was not clear how many officers had an officer who left his car and the suspect started running and there was a confrontation.
It is not clear what happened during the confrontation. Pelly said that Officer Teser had deployed at some point.
At 6:16 pm, the officer called the shooting and the police say the officer and the suspect exchanged fire. The officer, whose name has not been released, was unharmed while the suspect died at the scene. Police said the two men were black.
